Oregon Council of Rock & Mineral Clubs
Minutes of Meeting
Oregon Council of Rock and Mineral Clubs October 27, 2012 Oregon Council Fall Meeting at Clackamette Club Show in Canby, Oregon minutes. Our meeting was called to order by Don Innes, President. Summer minutes were approved. Treasurer Brenda Burford reported $2100.15 in our account. Also she and John have new address: 1894 21Street SE Albany, OR 97322 Vicki Johnson our Capital Case Agent gave report. In celebrating our 30 years of having the case on display in the Capital Building in Salem, OR, we will have 9 of our clubs using 3 feet of space in the case to display our favorite Oregon material on Nov. 27, 2012 for 6 months. Look up the article “Showcase at the Capital by Mura Birdsall (1983 Lapidary Journal) on our website http://www.oregoncouncilrmc.org/ for the history. Vicki reminds us that each piece should be labeled with name and county location where found. Also nothing precious and will be on display for 6 months. Also Don Innes found in the showcase history that there had been an Oregon State Seal made with small chops of different rock chips by the Oregon Agate Club and given to the governor and was hung in the Capital Building. Then at some point Oregon Agate Club borrowed it back to use at their show and it was stolen. Someone in their club made another one and they still use it during their annual show times. Vicki Johnson had recently talked with Belle Smith from BLM about the Rogers Mt. Wood Area. The person who has the gold claim has not followed the guidelines required. BLM has filed a lawsuit against the person. So we hope we will still get to have our site for hunting wood sometime in the future. Don Innes brought up an article from the Range Magazine titled “Our Federal Land Lord” which he found in the ALAA Newsletter and he recommends reading. There is also another article in the May-June 2012 ALAA Newsletter titled “How to work the System” by Ed Mattson. It is quite long but some good information! Don had also found an article titled “Mineral, Rock Collecting and Metal Detecting on the National Forests”. (Note if you Google that title you will get the article by Mike Doran, May 27, 2009) NARG representative, Phil Knutson reported that their members can now get a permit from the OR Parks for smaller fossils found in solid rock or on the beach. They do have to report larger fossils found. Don Young from Umpqua Gem & Mineral Club in Roseburg said the rock hounds in their area are still collecting agate from a Forest Service Area that they put a berm on several years ago. They haven’t been able to get them to remove, but they haven’t objected to the agate hunting. Oregon Agate and Tualatin Valley Clubs have requested an OR Council member to visit their meetings for additional information and questions. Vicki Johnson & Lenora Smith may try to visit. For those people who are going to Quartzite there will be an ALAA meeting Jan 25 or 26, 2013. Our next meeting will be at the Sweet Home Show the fourth weekend of March 23 and 24, 2013. Meeting adjourned.
