[printer friendly version]  [home page]

The Spring meeting of the Oregon Council was convened on March 29, 2008, in Sweet Home, Oregon, The meeting was called to order by Paul Heesacker. Attendees included Paul and Beth Heesacker (TVGC), John Burford and Dee David (Sweet Home Club), Ted and Vicki Johnson (WAMS), Diana Pace (Umpqua Gem and Mineral Club), Dan Zaiss (Eugene Mineral Club), Troy and Lenora Smith (MHRC).

The fall minutes were read and approved after corrections made to 3 misspelled names.

Treasurer Report

Beth Heesacker reported that the Council's account balance started at $2672.02. After paying out $319.74 to Dan Zaiss for Web Site and mailing cost, the remaining account balance was $2353.02.

Capitol Showcase

Vicki Johnson reported Springfield Club is in Capital Showcase since Oct. 19 and Rogue Club of Grants Pass may be next. The State capital Building is 150 years old this year and the capital people have asked for something special thru out the year. Vicki will contact. We think the Springfield Club was one of the first clubs to exhibit in the capital after it was installed in 1982 by the Rock Clubs in Oregon at cost of $3,545.

Old Business

Saddle Mt. Petrified wood area in WA is open except the areas with signs from rancher with the mineral rights. It has been recommended that we not collect on the ranchers areas as he is expecting to be paid for all wood collected.

Dee David reported that Weyerhaeuser property in Linn County is OK to collect on with pick and shovel if there is no logging in process. He also said that some areas in Linn County can be collected on with shovel and pick around Calapooia River, Snow Peak, Chandler Mt, and Hill Timber Co. But don't go beyond gates with vehicle.

The Hemlock Lake Agate Area needs to be verified with Forest Service in Roseburg that they are indeed open to pick and shovel. Diana Pace said she would check with the Forest Service there.

New Business

The location for the Council's Fall meeting was discussed. The Heesackers have to at an American Federation Meeting at the time of the Portland Regional Show. Other fall shows, locations and dates were discussed. Any potential venue must be able to accomodate the Oregon Council Competiton. Paul will contact Bea and Forrest Settle about the Oregon City Clackamette Show as a potentail site for our fall meeting and the competition. Other clubs with fall shows include Umpqua Gem and Mineral Show, Sept.6 and 7 in Roseburg. Diana Pace from the Umpqua Club said there would be plenty of room for display cases and a room for the meeting.

We discussed some of the trophy rules such as "All materials in the exhibit will have to be from Oregon and be the work of the exhibitor(s). The exhibits will be entered at a show where the Oregon Council is holding one of its three meetings. At least 3 of the Judges will be officers of the council and be from different clubs." These rules are posted on the Web Site. The trophy will have to be engraved with the winners name and the location of the competition may determine that. The Johnson's said they have a small engraver, but it only has one font.

Next Council Meeting

Our next meeting will be at Madras Show Saturday July 5th at 1pm.

The meeting was adjourned.
Minutes were recorded and written by Lenora Smith Vice-President
